"The book combines a lot of facts woven into a story that I am forced to call 'fiction' - although almost everything in it actually happened," Steve explained. "Obviously, there were some sticky security issues involved. I had to make some very minor detail changes for those reasons, though the Missileers who have read the story are concerned that I may have said too much. I've been working on releasing the story for almost 30 years but I didn't want to publish the book until the time was right and I was sure I could tell it in a way that would honor the service of everyone involved.' When questioned about why some historical positions are held by apparently fictional characters Steve responded, "I replaced some public figures with fictional characters because I put words in the mouths of those individuals that may not have been spoken by the real person - but were essential scenes to tell the story. Whenever an actual historical figure is used by name or speaks it is a direct quote from a researched source. Blending facts into fiction is a dance. The goal is to honor the truth while making it readable and interesting." |
